The next day, as soon as I got to the detention center, I accepted his offer. I took him out of his cell, telling the other women that he was due for special examinations, but as soon as we were out of their sight, I let him lead me, not to the antique sperm bank, but to the control room.

As soon as I saw the two women standing in front of the door keeping watch, I dragged Tom into the next hallway, pressing our bodies in the tight space between two pillars so that passersby would not see us. “I have to do this alone. They will suspect us if we go in together,” I whispered, turning my face away from his because we were standing so close together that I could practically kiss him by accident.

“You don’t know how to hack that thing,” he protested.

“I know all the codes. I don’t have to hack.”

He shook his head. “If you knew all the codes, you would have done this already.”

I didn’t have an answer for him.

He scoffed. “You have got to stop lying to me.”

“I’m not—”

“You’re scared.”

I glowered at him, resenting the accusation…even if it was true. “Look, it won’t do either of us much good if we can’t even get past the guards.”

Tom leaned into me. My heart skipped a beat, because I thought for sure that he would kiss-

I dropped my eyes, slamming my forehead against his chest. I felt his chin sit itself on the top of my head and all at once it seemed that I had only evaded one intimate embrace to fall into another. And it felt right. Just perfectly, simply right.

“You can get past the guards,” he whispered.

I bit my lip. His demanding reassurance was almost inspiring. I scanned the hallway, looking for the slightest distraction to get the women out of my way. Then, my eyes landed on the alarm three feet away. If I pulled it, they would have to evacuate the entire facility…but that also meant I might just get five minutes alone with my father. That was all I needed. I darted out of his grip and pulled the alarm. We stood there for a pregnant moment, watching as the florescent lighting grew dark and red; as the air filled with the sounds of sirens, mixing with the sounds of shouting and cursing. In only thirty seconds, the guards cleared their posts.

Tom shot me a crooked smile before jumping out of his hiding place and dragging me towards the door. I pulled it open, letting it shut behind me as I took in the massive control room. A large, flat screen monitor that gave live feeds of every camera in the building told me that pandemonium had ensued in the entire facility. Every feed showed crowds and crowds of people, men and women alike, packed like sardines in the corridors and preparing for evacuation. As I stared, regret growing in the darkest corner of my mind, Tom walked up behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders.
